Established at Thirty, Unperplexed at Forty? The Truth and Myths of the Midlife Crisis
The ancient maxim once treated as a guide to life has become an elusive goal for many. Is a midlife crisis unavoidable fate, or an exaggerated myth?
“Established at thirty, unperplexed at forty”—this ancient maxim, once regarded as a guide to life, has become an elusive goal for many. Not established at thirty and still perplexed at forty: is a midlife crisis truly an unavoidable fate, or an exaggerated myth?
When we are young, we always look toward the future and imagine our careers, families, and dreams. Everything seems full of possibility.
But once we reach our thirties, we begin to realize that life is finite and that its second half has quietly begun . Can the things we hoped to do but have not accomplished still be achieved? The possibilities in life seem to disappear one by one, and our ideals begin to conflict with reality.
With aging parents above us and young children below, many middle-aged people are stretched beyond capacity by financial pressure and workplace competition. Their children need an education, their parents need care, and at work they must still compete with younger colleagues. They often feel exhausted and lonely, and may even become depressed.
Poetry and distant horizons still live in the heart. Ahead lie our ideals; behind us stand our responsibilities. We want to take a bold chance, but cannot afford to lose. We refuse to accept an ordinary life, yet reality holds us back.
Caught in these conflicts, struggles, and feelings of powerlessness, middle-aged people gradually watch their ideals become memories and sighs.
Although the midlife crisis seems especially common today, it does not belong exclusively to our generation.
As early as 1965, Canadian social scientist Elliott Jaques introduced the concept of the “midlife crisis,” referring to major psychological and emotional changes during middle age.
In the early years of China's reform and opening up in the 1980s, the shift from a planned economy to a market economy shattered many people's “iron rice bowls”—their once-secure jobs. Employment and learning opportunities were far scarcer than they are today. Those who lost their jobs either tried running a small private business or simply retired for good.
When we were young, we could not understand the difficulties our parents' generation faced. Yet the pressure and anxiety they carried were no less severe than what we experience today.
Social development created many opportunities, and amid economic prosperity, our generation of middle-aged people benefited from a period of expanding education and careers.
At the same time, however, the costs of housing, education, healthcare, and everyday life rose sharply. Social competition intensified, education became an arms race, and parents began pushing their children ever harder. Technology changed rapidly; when knowledge and skills failed to keep pace, careers easily hit a ceiling or were eliminated altogether.
Career bottlenecks, family responsibilities, and physical decline leave many middle-aged people confused and anxious.
Yet a crisis can also become a turning point.
Psychologist Carl Jung once said: “A crisis is itself an opportunity—the beginning of an individual's journey toward truly becoming themselves.”
On the transformation of middle age, Jung believed: “The first half of life is a process of natural growth and adaptation to the external world; the second half should turn inward, devoted to developing and realizing the self.”
In other words, a midlife crisis is a turning point—an opportunity to reassess ourselves and rebuild meaning in our lives.
The inner conflicts of middle age often arise from unmet expectations, suppressed emotions, and contradictions within ourselves. The first step toward resolving them is to acknowledge that they exist. Accept negative emotions and imperfection, and let go of unrealistic goals and expectations.
Understanding life's imperfections is the beginning of reconciliation with ourselves and of personal growth. Life is a gradual experience, and what matters is living in the present.
In terms of physical health, middle age often brings suboptimal health. We should maintain regular routines, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and moderate exercise. A healthy body supports a healthy mind and helps rekindle our enthusiasm for life.
For personal development, middle-aged people should deepen their professional expertise while broadening their skills in other areas, especially soft skills. Technical professionals, for example, can learn communication and management, take on more mentoring and knowledge-sharing work, and extend their value beyond solving problems alone to helping more people succeed.
Psychologist Raymond Cattell proposed a theory: in middle age, intelligence shifts from fluid intelligence toward crystallized intelligence.
Fluid intelligence includes logical reasoning, rapid learning, and memory, areas in which young people have a clear advantage. Crystallized intelligence includes language, comprehension, judgment, and associative thinking—the softer abilities involved in dealing with people and situations. These capacities can continue growing until the age of seventy-five.
Consider the older presidents of the United States. Their physical stamina and reactions may not match those of younger people, but their experience and wisdom give them a decisive advantage.
True awakening in middle age comes when we stop being ruled by social conventions and other people's judgments, follow our inner voice, and make full use of our strengths. Middle age can then become more mature and creative. Life may begin to gather momentum and open onto a wider horizon.
We may never recover the fervor of youth, but middle age gives us a deeper strength—the courage and wisdom to move toward broader possibilities in life.
Every stage has its own meaning, and middle age is precisely a crucial period for understanding and shaping ourselves more fully.
Seen from this perspective, middle age is life's true new beginning. Raise yourself all over again.
