The Most Important Advice I Would Give to Someone Entering the Workplace
It is job-hunting season for university seniors, and many are about to move from campus into the workplace. Faced with an uncertain future, they may feel lost, lack confidence, and worry about whether they can adapt. If you could offer them only one piece of advice, what would it be?

It is job-hunting season for university seniors, and many students are about to move from campus into the workplace. Faced with an uncertain future, they may feel lost, lack confidence, and worry about whether they can adapt. As someone who has already made that transition, if you could offer newcomers only one piece of advice, what would it be?
Recently, leaders at my alma mater invited me to serve as a career-planning mentor for students. I felt honored, but after careful consideration, I decided to decline for the time being. Why?
Career planning is more complex today than it used to be. In the past, we could set a clear goal and follow it step by step. Today, however, career paths are more varied, and there are far more choices.
Career planning also differs from person to person because everyone's interests and strengths are different. Doing it well requires both broad experience and sustained attention. I already have a great deal of work on my plate and worry that I could not fulfill the responsibility properly.
Still, after so many years of working, I would like to offer younger students some personal advice. There is so much I could say, but if I had to choose the single most important point, it would be this:
Keep learning.
Yes, it is hardly an original suggestion. Yet this simple advice really is the most important of all. Why?
Because people who are unwilling to learn cannot take in any other advice.
The human heart is like a door that opens in only one direction. No matter how hard you push from the outside, it will not open; from the inside, the lightest push is enough.
Only someone who is open-minded and willing to learn will truly listen to other people's advice and make changes. Those who close themselves off will continue doing things their own way, no matter how much you try to help; nothing you say will get through.
One major difference between the workplace and school is that there are no closed-book exams at work. Every difficult problem is solved through seeking help widely .
Many things at work do not exist in isolation. Rather than struggling entirely on your own, what matters more is whether you can identify the heart of the problem and make good use of teamwork and the resources around you. How far you advance in your career does not depend only on how hard you work. Your way of thinking and your way of getting things done will always matter most.
Where do insight and methods come from? Only from learning externally and reflecting within.
This brings to mind a Zen concept called “the moment of pecking from within and without.” Put simply, it is the subtle moment when teacher and student understand one another and spark insight together.
The “inner peck” represents the student's active exploration and learning, while the “outer tap” represents the teacher's guidance and help. Only when the student is ready and feels a genuine desire to learn can the teacher offer guidance at the right moment, allowing breakthrough and understanding to emerge.
It is like a chick hatching from an egg: the chick pecks from inside the shell while the hen taps it from the outside. The two must act together, from within and without, at the right moment for the chick to break free successfully.
But if the student is not ready or does not have a strong enough desire to learn, even the teacher's greatest effort will have little effect. You cannot force insight on someone whose understanding is too far removed, just as you cannot wake someone who is pretending to sleep.
**At the right moment, prompting meets response; without a question, there is no teaching. Only when you take the initiative to learn will others be willing to share more with you and offer more guidance.

The world is developing too quickly. Everything is changing: professional skills may become obsolete, and entire industries may shift. Yet amid all this uncertainty, the greatest certainty is the need to keep learning and preserve our ability to adapt.
Learning extends far beyond professional skills. Once you enter the workplace and wider society, you discover how much more there is to learn: interpersonal communication, emotional regulation, teamwork, management, and even how to understand yourself and others more deeply.
If you can open your heart and remain willing to learn, you will discover that everyone around you can become your teacher. They may be your university classmates and professors, your colleagues and managers at work, or anyone you meet in everyday life. Each can help you gain insight and continue to grow.
Learning is not merely a means of acquiring skills; it is a way of thinking and an attitude toward life.
It is curiosity about the unknown world and a desire for inner growth.
So I hope that every young person about to enter the workplace can continue learning throughout life. This is not for anyone else, nor is it merely a way to solve the immediate problem.
Rather, it is a way to understand the world and yourself more fully, and to live the life you most want to live.
