2024年10月13日,SpaceX在德克萨斯州南部基地第5次发射星舰。超重型助推器在与星舰分离后不久就被发射塔的“筷子”夹住。
On October 13, 2024, SpaceX launched Starship for the fifth time from its site in South Texas. Shortly after separating from Starship, the Super Heavy booster was caught by the launch tower's giant “chopsticks.”
在这之前,火箭都是一次性的,发射后直接坠入大气层烧毁掉或掉入海洋。如果把火箭比作飞机,传统火箭就像是每次将乘客送到终点后就报废了。
Before this, rockets were essentially disposable. After launch, they burned up while falling through the atmosphere or dropped into the ocean. If a rocket were an airplane, a conventional rocket would be scrapped after delivering its passengers just once.
这次火箭回收是航天史上的重大里程碑,可以大大降低太空探索成本,让大规模星际旅行成为可能。虽然登陆火星还有很大的难度,但至少去月球旅行的机会大大增加了。
This recovery was a major milestone in the history of spaceflight. It can dramatically reduce the cost of space exploration and make large-scale interplanetary travel possible. Landing on Mars remains enormously difficult, but the prospect of traveling to the Moon has at least become far more realistic.

How was Musk able to accomplish something so imaginative? SpaceX is a private company, yet it achieved a feat that even NASA, backed by the resources of an entire nation, had not accomplished.
实际上,NASA以前也考虑过火箭回收的想法,但技术难度太大,再加上NASA的航天任务主要是政府资助,他们更关注任务的成功率,而不是成本。其次政府对项目的失败更敏感,因此通常会更加保守。
NASA had in fact considered reusable rockets before, but the technical challenge was immense. Because its space missions are mainly government-funded, NASA focuses more on mission success than on cost. Governments are also more sensitive to project failure and therefore tend to be more conservative.

Musk's SpaceX, by contrast, embraces rapid experimentation, rapid iteration, and bold innovation. A successful commercial space market can also produce enormous economic value, giving a private company stronger incentives and a competitive edge.

More important still are Musk's extraordinary imagination, foresight, appetite for risk, and persistence.

First, vision matters enormously. Every great achievement begins as a compelling picture of the future. A vision is not merely something you draw for yourself; it gives a group of people a reason to strive together. Starship's success reflects years of work by a remarkable team. Musk's larger vision guides them: to make humanity a multiplanetary species rather than one confined to Earth.

Second, what we believe determines what we consider possible. Musk uses first-principles thinking to see through to the nature of a problem, break with habitual assumptions, and imagine it anew. Any complex problem can be reduced to its most basic elements. Why can't a rocket be reused? In the end, the answer is that it can.

Third, complex undertakings rarely succeed quickly, but rapid experimentation and iteration allow us to keep improving and raise the odds of success until the goal is reached. The process was extraordinarily difficult: rocket-recovery tests repeatedly ended in failure, explosion, and rebuilding, and SpaceX came close to bankruptcy. Yet Musk believed in the power of belief, refused to give up, and persevered until this astonishing success arrived.
