Does Life Call for More Reason or More Emotion?
From everyday matters to life-changing decisions, we often find ourselves pulled between emotion and reason.
From everyday matters to life-changing decisions, we often find ourselves pulled between emotion and reason.
When we follow our intuition and feelings, reason steps in to ask whether we have thought things through. When we make a prudent decision based on reason, emotion asks in return whether this is what we truly want.
The course of life continually moves between emotion and reason.
• Reason layered over emotion
Physiologically, emotion is associated mainly with the brain's limbic system, including the amygdala and hippocampus, while reason is associated with the prefrontal cortex. As we grow older, the prefrontal cortex gradually matures, strengthening our emotional regulation and logical reasoning.
As children, we are driven more by emotion: expressive, direct, and impulsive. As adults, reason gradually takes greater control, and we learn to accept facts and weigh advantages against disadvantages.
Yet reason does not replace emotion; it is layered on top of it. Emotion is our underlying color, while reason is the filter we acquire later.
• Should we follow emotion or reason?
When making a choice, if we follow what we love, listen to our inner voice, and make an emotional decision, reason will need to step in and help us solve problems when setbacks arise later.
Conversely, if our initial choice is overly rational, it may appear prudent yet conflict with what we genuinely desire. When trouble arrives one day, our emotions will surface, entangle us, and hold us back.
I recently watched the film *Like a Rolling Stone*. Its protagonist, Li Hong, continually chose the rational path of conforming to social expectations and fulfilling family responsibilities instead of listening to her inner voice. As a result, she spent decades living with struggle and regret.
In the end, she made a bold decision and drove across mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas in her beloved car, rediscovering her true self. Her emotions led her to a freedom and independence she had never experienced before.
We often say that decisions should be rational. Yet the truth is that reason may guide life's smaller choices, while the far-reaching decisions often require us to listen to our emotions—choices about careers, partners, and dreams—because they concern who we are and what we truly want.
• Let reason protect emotion, and emotion inspire reason
Teacher Liang Ning once put it well: “The opposite of reason is not emotion, but instinct. The opposite of emotion is not reason, but numbness. People who rely only on instinct will not succeed; people whose hearts are numb will not be happy.”
When emotion drives us, we are often full of passion and motivation, but we can also overlook real-world risks. Reason can then help us assess the situation calmly and find a more viable path.
When we are overly rational, however, we may remain calm and clear but lose our passion. Even if we achieve our goal, we may still feel empty and drained.
Reason and emotion are therefore not opposites, but interdependent. We need reason to correct instinct, and emotion to awaken us from numbness.
• Use reason in handling matters and emotion in treating people
In our interactions with others, we often sense the different qualities of reason and emotion. An overly emotional person may be warm and enthusiastic, but also prone to moodiness and poor judgment.
An overly rational person may be good at analyzing problems, yet can come across as cold and lacking in emotional resonance.
How can we find a balance?
Simply put, we should use reason to handle matters and emotion to treat people.
Reason helps us solve problems calmly and avoid mistakes driven by emotion, while emotion enables us to form sincere connections and offer one another warmth.
• The wisdom of integrating reason and emotion
Reason and emotion are different dimensions of cognition and experience. Like our left and right hands, neither is dispensable.
True maturity and wisdom do not lie in choosing reason or emotion, but in moving flexibly between them in different situations so that each complements the other.
Lin Huiyin once said, “Too much emotion cannot carry us through life's daily necessities; too much reason cannot carry us through its romance. For the rest of my life, I only wish to make a living with the practical world in my hands and to love with poetry in my heart, shaping a life that I truly enjoy.”
Emotion determines why we set out and helps us find passion, meaning, and motivation. Reason determines how we arrive, providing the path and method for reaching our goals. Only by possessing both can we live a life with warmth and direction.
