Good Communication Begins by Separating Facts from Judgments
Good communication always requires us to learn the difference between facts and judgments.
Good communication always requires us to learn the difference between facts and judgments.
What is a judgment? A judgment is the gap between reality and expectation.
When you say, “Why are you so slow?” you are not stating a fact. You are expressing the gap between your expectation—“I want you to move faster”—and the other person's behavior.
The fact is: “They arrived five minutes later than expected.”
When you say, “You never get to the point,” what you really mean is that you expected the other person to understand your core need quickly.
The fact is: “They missed one key task.”
A judgment is, at its core, the gap between what we expect and what has not met that expectation.
Communication framed as judgment often leads to conflict.
That is because a judgment is a one-sided, subjective verdict—an expression of dissatisfaction with the other person.
If you tell someone, “You lack self-discipline,” what they hear is, “There is something wrong with me.” The fact, however, may simply be: “For the past two nights, you stayed up late looking at your phone.”
Judgments put people on the defensive and invite resistance; facts encourage reflection.
“You stayed up looking at your phone until after midnight. I am worried that this will affect your health, and I hope you can go to bed earlier.”
This approach begins with facts while also expressing your feelings and expectations. It makes it easier for the other person to listen, reflect, and perhaps even appreciate your concern.
The essence of communication is not to change the other person, but to narrow the gap between facts and expectations.
When you replace judgment with facts, the other person hears not an accusation, but a direction for improvement.
Facts are objective; judgments are subjective.
Facts are the starting point for shared understanding; judgments are the fuse that ignites conflict.
If there is only one thing to remember about good communication, it is this: first learn to distinguish facts from judgments.
