The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru: A History Not Forgotten
When a ship sinks to the bottom of the sea, when a person becomes a mystery.
On the Mid-Autumn Festival, I went to see *The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru*. It had relatively few screenings, and the next one after lunch was not until 3:30 p.m., in a VIP auditorium. When I bought the tickets, not a single seat had been reserved. The auditorium was still empty when my family and I arrived, so the three of us had the entire VIP theater to ourselves.
I had done no research beforehand and knew only that it was a documentary. It far exceeded my expectations. From the first half onward, I was constantly holding back tears, and I was still crying at the end. In my mind, it is unquestionably the best film I have seen this year.
Three things in the film moved me most:
1. Director Fang Li's idealism and perseverance In 2014, while scouting locations on Dongji Island with Han Han for *The Continent*, Fang Li happened to hear local fishermen tell the story of the Lisbon Maru. The Japanese transport ship, carrying 1,816 British prisoners of war, was struck by an American torpedo and sank in the waters near the island. Eight hundred British servicemen died there.
Only now did I learn that the lyric “When a ship sinks to the bottom of the sea, when a person becomes a mystery” from the song *The Continent* refers to the Lisbon Maru.
Fang spent ten years conducting research across the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, the United States, and other countries. He gathered a large body of first-hand material and ultimately brought this long-forgotten history back to the screen.
He exhausted his savings and sold three homes to make the film. Although attendance and box-office results have so far been disappointing, none of that diminishes the film's immense value. Fang has said that it is the most important thing he has done in his life.
2. No one wins a war. In the film, the director interviews representatives from the different sides. Whether Japanese or American, they say that those involved were merely following orders or acting according to established rules. In that situation, everyone appeared simply to be doing what they were supposed to do, yet together they caused an immense tragedy.
War strips people of free will and turns them into cold, unfeeling instruments with no power to choose. Those who took part in the conflict also spent the rest of their lives carrying guilt or grief.
3. The cruelty of war is revealed in individual lives. On a battlefield, a soldier may be only a number or a nameless face. To his family, however, he is a son, a husband, a father, or a brother—a living person of immeasurable importance who can never be replaced.
The letters, old photographs, and grief on the faces of family members in the film make you feel the pain that countless families carried throughout their lives and could never erase.
If a good film can make people reflect on the meaning of war and the fragility of humanity, its value surpasses any measure of commercial success.
Finally, I still recommend seeing this thought-provoking film in a cinema and experiencing it for yourself.
