Forever Young, Forever Moved to Tears
When I was at school, time always seemed to pass slowly. But once I graduated and started working, it noticeably sped up.
When I was at school, time always seemed to pass slowly. But once I graduated and started working, it noticeably sped up.
First came our reunion one year after graduation, then the five-year and ten-year reunions, and before long perhaps the twentieth and thirtieth. The speed at which those numbers change can suddenly take us by surprise.
The gears of time cannot be stopped. Physical aging is a slow and natural process: our skin loses its firmness, our minds respond less quickly, and our stamina declines. But is there a moment when we suddenly feel that we have grown old inside?
Some say that we truly begin to grow old when we lose our curiosity.
Whenever my son finds a new way to play with a toy or discovers a new feature on a phone, he runs over excitedly to show me and eagerly explains its mysteries again and again.
Seeing his excitement, I can feel the vitality and joy generated by that powerful curiosity. Yet I have to admit that even when he shows me something I have never seen before, I feel nowhere near the same curiosity or excitement.
Others say that aging begins with our moment of greatest glory.
The moment when we shine brightest is the moment we begin to age. We live on the feedback and rewards of accomplishment; if no greater achievement follows a high point, aging begins.
Getting into university, falling in love, finding our first job, buying a home, getting married, and having children—each major milestone brings immense joy and satisfaction.
Yet when those high points have passed and no new goals or challenges emerge, some of the brightness fades. Their disappearance leaves us feeling that there is “nothing much to look forward to.”
I have also heard another view: much of what Chinese culture calls maturity is really premature aging of the spirit and the disappearance of individuality.
China has a culture that emphasizes collectivism, where maturity often means controlling one's individuality and following society's rules.
Within this culture, we are often taught to be humble, reserved, and understated, and to restrain self-expression.
Modern ideas, by contrast, place greater emphasis on individuality, independent thought, innovation, and self-expression, creating tension with traditional values.
Many people have to conceal their true thoughts and suppress their authentic individuality. In trying to understand and pursue “maturity,” young people often feel confused and conflicted.
Growing old is unavoidable for everyone, but we can choose how we grow old.
Perhaps we can redefine what it means to “grow old.” As long as we remain curious, keep creating new high points, and rethink what “maturity” means, we have not truly grown old.
So, may we stay forever young and forever moved to tears.
