Why Does Emotional Intelligence Matter More After We Start Working?
We rarely discuss emotional intelligence at school, and schools scarcely teach it. As a result, many people hold an incomplete—or even mistaken—understanding of what it means.

The scientific definition of emotional intelligence is a person's ability to perceive, understand, and respond to their own emotions and those of others. It is not simply knowing how to navigate social conventions, much less being slick or calculating.
Why, then, does emotional intelligence matter so much more after we start working?
At school, our education focuses mainly on intellectual ability. We acquire knowledge, and most examinations have standard answers. Logic, analysis, and memory are what count, and all of them can be measured directly with grades.
Once we enter the workplace, however, traditional closed-book examinations disappear. Most problems at work have no standard answer, and there are many possible solutions.
More importantly, the workplace and society form a vast network of collaboration. Few people can succeed entirely on their own; most of us need to solve problems and create value with others.
This means we cannot avoid communicating, interacting, and collaborating with other people. The quality of your relationships and your ability to coordinate resources across different parties directly shape how fully you can realize your value and how far you can develop.
Open-ended problems and environments require more than intelligence. They call for keen awareness of the people and circumstances around us and the ability to find an appropriate path through uncertainty. Put simply, they require a sense of good judgment and proportion.
At school, competition is often a zero-sum game: if one person earns a higher score and rank, someone else must rank lower.
In the workplace, competition is more often non-zero-sum. Helping one another advance and succeed together matters far more. None of this is possible without emotional intelligence.
It follows that a person's future success depends not only on intelligence and diligence, but also on their ability to interact with the network of relationships around them.
In an age that increasingly values connection and shared success, emotional intelligence will become ever more important.
