Why Do So Many People Love Running Marathons?
A marathon is an extreme endurance event and may not necessarily benefit the body. Yet completing the challenge can make you feel powerful and ready to conquer more. That is the meaning of extreme sport and the spirit marathon runners pursue.
Last week, I took part in my first half marathon. The atmosphere of several thousand people running together was wonderful, with participants of every age and gender. I even ran alongside a man who looked about seventy for part of the course. It was clear to me that marathons are becoming more popular and attracting more participants.
At first, I merely watched my friends run marathons. This year, after joining several smaller running events, I decided to try a marathon myself at the suggestion and encouragement of friends. A half marathon is only twenty-one kilometers, far short of a full marathon's forty-two, but even so, very few people can complete one. Many find running five kilometers difficult.
The body's capabilities—including cardiovascular fitness, stamina, and muscular strength—can change significantly through sustained training. I rarely have large blocks of free time and my weekly mileage is actually quite low, yet perseverance has still improved my endurance considerably. Every sport also involves technique. A friend once asked whether determination alone was enough to run a marathon. I told her that determination might get someone to the finish line, but it could also lead to injury and would not be sustainable. Exercise is therefore not only about training the body; it also requires learning and understanding.
The rise of the marathon reflects the growth of the running community, which has several causes:
- Greater awareness of health. Most people today spend their lives and working hours sitting still, so they need ways to exercise and stay healthy. Running is an excellent cardiovascular workout. As an activity that can be done alone, it can also relieve pressure and help both body and mind relax.
- Running is one of the simplest, least expensive, and most convenient forms of exercise. All it requires is an open area—or simply a road. I remember Yao Ming saying that Chinese people receive relatively little sports education in childhood, so most never master highly technical sports and can only choose a simple activity such as running in adulthood. There is some truth to that.
- The growing culture of running. Companies and organizations hold all kinds of running events, while many successful people promote running as a healthy and fashionable way of life. Their example has influenced many others, and running clubs and communities are becoming increasingly common.
- Advances in running equipment. Running shoes, smartwatches, and apps that track workouts, analyze data, accumulate points, and make it easy to share a completed run on social media have all made running smarter, safer, and more enjoyable.
As the number of runners grows, more people naturally want to progress. Moving from ten kilometers to twenty and then to a marathon feels like completing successive levels in a game. The exhilaration and sense of achievement can be addictive. Once people begin to love running, many become drawn into this continuing pursuit of challenging themselves.
I believe running is an excellent form of exercise, but a marathon should be approached cautiously and step by step. It is an extreme endurance event and may not necessarily benefit the body. Yet completing the challenge can make you feel powerful and ready to conquer more. That is the meaning of extreme sport and the spirit marathon runners pursue.
