Excellent Advice for Living, Part Two
Do not aim to be the best. Be the only.
On his sixty-eighth birthday, Kevin Kelly began writing down pieces of life advice for his children. He hoped they could understand this wisdom earlier in life, and those notes eventually became the book *Excellent Advice for Living*.
Here are several suggestions that made a strong impression on me and are worth putting into practice, together with my own reflections.

*The most selfish thing you can do*
*is to be generous.*
Kevin: Generosity may appear altruistic, but through generosity we can actually build deeper relationships with others, gain lasting trust and support, create more opportunities for collaboration, and receive help when it matters most. Generosity also makes it easier to experience a sense of value and fulfillment. This selfless mindset can increase our happiness and attract more positive people into our lives. Over time, all of these things can continue to strengthen and support us, making success more likely.

*Listening is a profoundly powerful skill.*
*When someone you love is speaking, keep asking,*
*“Anything else?”*
*until they say there is nothing more.*
Kevin: Listening is the foundation of understanding and the heart of communication, yet it is easily neglected. In both life and work, listening helps people feel valued, accepted, and understood. It can prevent many misunderstandings and conflicts and create deeper connections. Listening is an act of care for others, but it also allows us to absorb different perspectives and ideas, making it an opportunity for growth. It is an extraordinarily powerful skill, so we should restrain the urge to speak and listen more closely to others.

*The main purpose of travel*
*is to let go.*
*The more you let go of,*
*the farther you can go.*
Kevin: When we travel lightly, leave familiar surroundings, and journey to distant cities, villages, seas, mountains, and grasslands, we also set down our pressure and worries. We loosen our grip on life and release our anxiety about the future. In doing so, we regain inner calm, experience greater freedom and happiness, reconsider what life means, and find renewed strength.

*Gratitude*
*awakens everything good within you,*
*and it is an ability you can continually strengthen.*
Kevin: Gratitude helps us shift our perspective so that we notice what is good rather than what is lacking. A ray of sunlight, a cup of coffee, or a book—these seemingly small things are all part of life's beauty. The concern, support, and help that others give us, even a simple greeting, are worthy of appreciation. Gratitude awakens the good within us. This positive mindset can strengthen our relationships, improve our mental well-being, and make life better and better.

*Whenever you must choose*
*between being right and being kind,*
*always choose kindness.*
*Do not confuse kindness with weakness.*
Kevin: Being right concerns facts and logic, while kindness concerns ethics and wisdom. It goes beyond a simple judgment of right and wrong to consider people's feelings and well-being. Even as we pursue what is right, we should always preserve respect and care for others. Kindness does not mean compromise, and it certainly is not weakness. It is a form of wisdom that brings goodwill to the people and the world around us, creating a lasting positive influence.

*Do not be the best.*
*Be the only.*
Kevin: Being the best means competing; being the only means being yourself. Pursuing the best makes us dependent on external standards and other people's judgments. We keep trying to surpass others under pressure and anxiety, fall into the trap of comparison, and focus on what everyone else is doing instead of what we truly want. Being the only, by contrast, means being distinctive. Each person has a unique combination of talents, experiences, perspectives, skills, and interests. We can discover and develop these qualities to create value that is uniquely ours and cannot be replaced. Finding our own path in a complex world and living fully as ourselves—that is something beautiful.
