Excellent Advice for Living, Part Four
Do not worry about what other people think of you, because they are not thinking about you at all.
I selected several pieces of advice from Kevin Kelly's *Excellent Advice for Living* that are especially worth putting into practice. I have added my own reflections and am sharing them in the hope that we can encourage one another.

Do not worry about what other people think of you,
because they are not thinking about you at all.
Kun: Psychology describes a “spotlight effect”: people tend to overestimate how much others notice their behavior, as though they were standing beneath a spotlight, constantly observed and judged. In reality, everyone is occupied with their own concerns and pays little attention to others. Even when they do notice, they soon forget what someone else did. Once we recognize this truth, we can let go of needless anxiety and pressure, and simply do our own work with freedom, confidence, and focus.

The standard by which you treat others is not how bad they are,
but how good you are.
Kun: How we treat others should not depend on their behavior or character, but on our own values and character. Whether the other person is good or bad, remain kind. Whether or not they are honest, remain honest. That is what makes you genuinely kind and honest. Preserve this inner strength, and you can remain yourself while exerting a positive influence on the people around you.

If you believe every setback is only temporary,
you have chosen to be fortunate.
Kun: Believe in the power of belief, because conviction shapes destiny. Setbacks are unavoidable. If we believe they are temporary—and even regard them as opportunities to learn and grow—we are more likely to solve the problem before us, rise from the low point, and find renewed hope and motivation. In this sense, good fortune can be the result of a positive belief.

The size of what makes you angry
reveals the size of your perspective.
Kun: Emotions reflect our inner understanding. If you recognize that everyone makes mistakes, you are less likely to overreact to someone else's error. If you hold a longer-term goal in mind, you will not dwell on small matters in front of you, because you know what truly matters.

让他人觉得自己很重要;
Make other people feel important;
it will make them happy,
and it will make you happy too.
Kun: Everyone longs to be valued and recognized. When you listen to someone, ask for their opinion, express thanks and appreciation, or place trust and responsibility in their hands, they feel valued—and that makes them happy. It also strengthens your relationship, bringing benefit and happiness to you as well.

See that older person who always seems to be holding up the line?
That is you in the future.
Be patient.
Kun: Everyone in the world lives under different circumstances, but all of us, at the very least, will grow old. When we see older people struggling physically, moving slowly, or reacting less quickly, we should respond with understanding and respect. How we treat them today is how we are treating our future selves.
Be patient. Along the long road of life, waiting, hoping, and enduring are the recurring themes.
