A Critical Point in Personal Growth
A few days ago, my colleagues and I were discussing the atmosphere at work. Everyone agreed on the importance of recognition and acceptance: they bring people joy and confidence, and who would not welcome a little warmth amid a busy day?

From childhood onward, few things make us happier than praise from our parents or teachers, while criticism can leave us feeling upset for quite some time.
From a psychological perspective, recognition and acceptance give people a sense of psychological safety, whereas criticism is instinctively perceived as a threat.
Yet from the standpoint of personal growth, recognition and acceptance may be important—but what about criticism and strictness?
In one interview, Elon Musk was asked, “What has been the greatest challenge in your life?”
After careful thought, Musk replied, “Making sure you have a corrective feedback loop.”
To Musk, feedback is more than advice; it includes criticism grounded in objective truth. Any criticism from the outside is not an attack, but an opportunity to reexamine himself.
No one is perfect, and no closed loop can easily sustain growth. Nature works the same way: only when the environment provides feedback and living things adapt in response can they evolve and survive.
In reality, however, sincere and effective feedback is difficult to obtain. People are more inclined to tell us what we want to hear or to skirt a problem in vague, tactful language.
Wang Huiwen, a cofounder of Meituan, once made a memorable observation: “A manager willing to take responsibility must push a report from the ‘Peak of Mount Stupid’ into the ‘Valley of Despair.’ Whether that person can then climb the ‘Slope of Enlightenment’ depends on what they are able to make of it.”
Wang emphasized that managers need not only responsibility for their duties, but also the courage to act. A manager with that courage should be willing to give reports negative feedback—even to push them from the Peak of Mount Stupid into the Valley of Despair.
The “Peak of Mount Stupid” comes from the Dunning–Kruger effect in psychology. Put simply, people do not truly understand themselves: those who are ignorant do not know that they are ignorant. This cognitive bias is a major obstacle to growth.

The key to moving beyond the “Peak of Mount Stupid” is sincere negative feedback, but giving it takes considerable courage. In practice, most people resist and resent negative feedback from others; some may even respond with hostility and cut the other person off.
For precisely this reason, many managers at work merely touch on minor issues without daring to probe the crucial ones. Some even mention only the good and not the bad in order to preserve harmonious relationships.
Yet many people fail to achieve breakthrough growth because they remain at the Peak of Mount Stupid without realizing it at all.
Those who are ignorant do not know their own ignorance, although everyone can see ignorance in someone else. Negative feedback therefore often has to be recognized and raised by another person.
Most people on the Peak of Mount Stupid have to undergo a profound setback before they can gain a thorough understanding of themselves, awaken, and begin climbing the path toward insight and growth.
Until then, they often remain unaware for a long time and cannot achieve breakthrough growth.
Carl Jung said, “There is no awakening without pain.”
In the Valley of Despair, people may feel intense frustration or even become lost. Yet that very self-doubt creates the conditions for breakthrough growth.
Ray Dalio once said, “Tough love is the hardest to give because it is so rarely welcomed, yet it is also the most important kind of love.”
He believes that facing reality is not easy, but ultimately, accuracy and kindness are one and the same.
Recognition and acceptance help establish a foundation of trust, while negative feedback gives that recognition the power to foster growth.
For example, someone may have strong professional skills but rarely take the initiative in communication. They may not initially regard this as a problem, but as their work becomes more complex, their career development may gradually become constrained. If someone can support them while sincerely identifying the issue and offering suggestions for improvement, they may break through the bottleneck much sooner.
In a sense, the more willing people are to take responsibility—or the more they genuinely care about us—the more honest their feedback and evaluation tend to be, and the more likely they are to help us awaken sooner.
The path of growth requires recognition and acceptance, but also criticism and feedback. As Musk put it, “Make sure you have a corrective mechanism.” Such a mechanism depends on people who are willing to offer us tough love.
