How to Make Smarter Decisions
How do we usually make decisions? Most of the time, perhaps, we rely on feelings or intuition—but how reliable are the choices we make that way?

How do we usually make decisions? Most of the time, perhaps, we rely on feelings or intuition—but how reliable are the choices we make that way?
A few weeks ago, I attended an interesting workshop on learning rational decision-making through Texas Hold'em. I usually make decisions intuitively. That makes me quick, but not necessarily accurate, so I joined the workshop out of curiosity and came away with some real insights.
At the beginning, we played several hands as we normally would, and my results still fluctuated considerably. The instructor then offered some guidance, asking each of us to develop a strategy and follow it strictly.
A strategy is essentially a set of rules that guides behavior. Mine, for example, specified how far I would call when I had a decent hand, how much I would risk when my cards were weak, and that I would fold immediately if a conservative player raised beyond a certain amount while my hand was not strong enough. These rules were developed calmly and were grounded in logic and reason.
We then played several more hands, and this time I followed my strategy closely. I found myself becoming noticeably calmer and more rational. I folded when I should fold and called when I should call. There were, of course, ambiguous situations that required flexibility. Overall, however, I avoided many unnecessary risks and losses, preserved my strength, and acted decisively when an opportunity appeared, allowing me to win.
This experience made me realize that we should become better at developing strategies to help ourselves make more rational and accurate decisions.
Why is making a decision so difficult?
First, too many factors can influence a decision. Our brains struggle to organize all this complex information, analyze each part, weigh the trade-offs, and reach an accurate judgment.
Second, human beings are emotional. We are easily influenced by our feelings: anxiety and pressure make calm thought difficult, while excitement can drive us to act impulsively.
Beyond that, we can become trapped in indecision or choice overload. We are also susceptible to cognitive biases and personal preferences, loss aversion, and the tendency to keep going until reality finally forces us to stop.
In Texas Hold'em, my most common decision-making mistakes were chasing the pot—or even going all in—when I had a good hand, and refusing to cut my losses promptly when my cards were poor. The former came from wishful thinking and impulse; the latter from loss aversion. Both are human weaknesses, but what was the result? It felt like gambling on luck, with highly random outcomes.
Once I had a strategy and followed it strictly, however, I was no longer driven by feelings and emotions. I let the strategy guide each decision. I might miss an occasional opportunity in the short term, but over time the fluctuations declined and my win rate improved substantially.
How can we make smarter decisions?
1. Gather sufficient information.
In simple terms, consider the full picture. When I bought my first home, I viewed properties only twice before rushing into a purchase. After moving in, I discovered one problem after another and deeply regretted the decision. The next time I bought a home, I listed nearly twenty criteria—including transport access, shopping convenience, nearby parks, layout, orientation, and floor—and assigned each a weight. I compared the scores of several properties before making the final decision. The result showed that this approach was more rational and helped me make a better choice.
2. Keep emotions from interfering.
We have an emotional mind and a rational mind. Once the emotional mind takes over, the rational one leaves the stage. How can we avoid being ruled by emotion? The simplest method is to give ourselves a cooling-off period. The more important the matter, the more slowly we should decide. A few days later, our thinking may already have changed.
3. Develop a strategy.
A strategy is a set of rules grounded in experience and logical reasoning. It can greatly reduce the blindness and randomness in our decisions. I once lost a considerable amount through securities investing. I had analyzed my choices carefully and was not acting emotionally, so why did I still fail? I believe one important reason was the absence of a clear strategy. I had no rules for total exposure, portfolio balance, taking profits, or cutting losses. That experience also taught me to respect the risks of investing. Without enough knowledge and experience to build an effective strategy—and the self-discipline to carry it out—we should not enter high-risk investments.
4. Take a long-term view.
Rational decisions tend to focus on long-term outcomes rather than short-term gains and losses. Define a long-term goal and let every decision move you toward it. At the same time, keep investing effort, reflecting, and improving instead of expecting a burst of all-out enthusiasm to carry you through. With this long-term approach, our decisions will become increasingly rational and accurate.
We make decisions every day. They can be difficult, yet they can also be simple. Think a little more, look a little further, learn from experience, and build a few strategies. By becoming more rational, we can make the most of a strong hand and stay in the game to the end.
