Managing Money, or Managing Time?
Last week, I attended a talk by Wei Zhe, former CEO of Alibaba, who shared an intriguing idea: do not manage your money; manage your time. Which matters more?
Last week, I attended a talk by Wei Zhe, former CEO of Alibaba. He shared an intriguing idea: Do not manage your money; manage your time.
Which do you think matters more—managing money or managing time?
At heart, both are forms of resource management. The former manages the limited resource of money, while the latter manages the even more limited resource of time.
Unlike money, time is a nonrenewable resource, yet it is also the fairest thing in the world .
No matter who you are, a year has 365 days and a day has 24 hours. Status and wealth cannot give you one extra second or take one minute away. Time favors no one; everyone has the same opportunity to use it.
What is unequal, however, is the value each person creates with their time.
Given the same amount of time, some people spend it scrolling through videos, playing games, complaining, or gossiping, while others use it to learn, exercise, and live positively. Over time, the difference in the value created by those hours grows ever wider.
How we use time is therefore a major force in shaping our lives. To use it well, we need to manage it.
You have probably heard the saying, “If you do not manage your money, your money will not take care of you.” The same applies to time: if you do not manage it, you lose it.
If we see time as a kind of wealth—the currency of life—then managing time is also a form of wealth management.
This wealth of time is especially valuable when we are young.
At that stage, you are in a crucial period of rapid learning, capability building, and career development. You may not have much in savings, either. However skilled you are at investing, even an excellent rate of return cannot yield very much from a small principal—yet pursuing it may consume a great deal of time and energy.
In most cases, before the age of thirty, managing time matters relatively more. Personal growth should come first: build your abilities and value, and develop your career or business.
As you grow older, you may have saved some money and begun facing major decisions such as buying a car or a home and getting married. At that point, you need to learn more about personal finance, allocate spending wisely, and begin exploring investments.
At this stage, if you still know only how to work hard and understand nothing about managing money—leaving cash in the bank without thought, failing to control spending, buying property without regard to timing, and making no plans for your wealth—it will be difficult to accumulate wealth over the long term.
Managing money and managing time are therefore not mutually exclusive. Ideally, we should do both.
We can use time management to improve our abilities and income while using financial management to preserve and grow our wealth. The emphasis simply changes at different stages of life.
Wealth can appreciate, but time can never be reclaimed.
Instead of chasing wealth first, manage your time well. It will become your greatest capital for the future.
